« My choreographic work draws on actions such as striking, evading, throwing and catching, which I detach from their usual purposes and contexts. Rooted in concrete physical situations, these actions generate different qualities of energy, acceleration and tension without being tied to either narrative or abstract form. They engage our bodily memory, kinesthetic empathy and affective response.

With this new creation, I want to extend this experience of movement across the different scales of the piece. A gesture may be perceived in all its precision before entering into relation with other movements, continuing through another body or spreading across the group. Attention shifts between the engagement of an individual performer, the relationships between several bodies and more collective forms.

Sa Pa’s music is closely connected to this exploration. Moving between deep techno and field recording, it explores the relationships between pulse, texture and sonic space. His compositions gradually shift our perception of rhythm and sound. A pulse can surface, recede or become physically palpable. This way of transforming a sonic situation over time resonates directly with the choreographic experience I want to develop.

With Éric Soyer, I am approaching light as a way of altering the presence of the bodies and our perception of space. Gradual shifts in intensity, angle or quality of light can change how we perceive distance, volume and the relationships between performers, allowing the same movement to appear differently.

Across the piece as a whole, composition becomes a way of modulating the experience of gesture. It can draw attention to an almost imperceptible inflection, widen it to encompass several bodies, allow energy to spread through the group, or bring out the more immediate physical force of a pulse. Rather than placing these experiences side by side, I want to explore how they can extend into and transform one another.

The form emerges through these shifts in attention and sensation. Dance, music and light form a single continuum in which movement can be experienced at different scales: in the precision of a gesture, the physical engagement of a body, the relationships between several performers, or the perception of the whole. »
